Lead Service Line Inventory

Lead Service Line Inventory

The Indian Wells Valley Water District (IWVWD or District) completed its initial Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) required by the U.S. EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions.  The deadline for the initial inventories was October 16, 2024.  Water service lines include the utility’s water service line, which extends from the water main to the water meter, and the customer’s private water service line, which extends from the water meter to the customer’s home or business.

The image illustrates the division of water service responsibility between the utility and the homeowner, showing the water main and service lines.

California Health and Safety Code section 300.6 prohibited the use of lead solders and lead pipes in public water systems beginning on January 1, 1986.  As a result, the State permitted utilities to label any construction after 1986 as “non-lead”. As a result, buildings constructed after January 1, 1986 did not require physical field inspection. Through historical records review and field investigations, the District determined there are no lead service lines requiring replacement in our service area.

Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR)

Some service lines or fittings in our water system are made of galvanized steel. Galvanized pipes can absorb lead over time if they were ever connected to a lead service line. Because of this, federal drinking water regulations classify these pipes as Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR).

GRR service lines are required to be replaced to help reduce the potential risk of lead in drinking water. Based on our service line inventory and available records, the following addresses have been identified as having a Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR) service line:

LSLI Galvanized Addresses

This classification does not mean that lead is currently present in the water at these locations. It means the service line meets the federal definition of Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR) because available records do not confirm that the galvanized pipe was never connected to a lead service line. Under drinking water regulations, these service lines are required to be replaced.

We will update this information as service lines are replaced or as new information becomes available.
